Set in 1970s and ’80s Bombay, The Immortals explores the relationships between art and business, and tradition and the future, by honing in on two very different families. Shyam Lol’s father taught him classical singing, but Lol makes his modest living teaching modern songs and intonation. Nirmalya Sengupta’s mother is a wealthy but talented student of Lol’s. She wants him to teach her son, who goes against the grain vocally and in terms of his comfortable upbringing. Teacher and student grow to learn about each other’s seemingly opposing lives and the struggle between classic and contemporary culture.
