Bosnian fugitive found in Calgary

After more than a decade on the lam, Alberta sheriffs have captured a convicted Bosnian double murderer.

Working on a tip from Hamilton cops, a 13-year manhunt was ended on Tuesday when Elvir Pobric, 37, was collared by sheriffs working with city police, setting up a traffic stop to nab the fugitive who escaped a Bosnian prison in 1996 and had been working in Calgary.

Elish Lemieux, a spokeswoman for the Alberta solicitor general’s office, said the bust is an important one for the year-old Fugitive Apprehension Sheriff Support Team (FASST), getting an escaped, convicted murderer off the streets.

“This unit is here to help keep Alberta safe and that’s what they did,” she said.

Pobric was convicted of the execution-style slaying of two associates in 1992, but slipped out of custody just three years into his 20-year sentence.

He will be appearing in Calgary court today facing several charges.

Lisa White of Canadian Border Services said following his appearance for charges in Calgary he will likely face an immigration hearing that will determine whether he will be extradited.
