Hundreds of people turned out Tuesday to mark the 9/11 anniversary and pay respects to the victims, survivors and first responders of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, which happened 17 years ago.

“On September 11, 2001 our nation changed forever. In the face of evil, America showed our resilience and strength,” Mayor Marty Walsh wrote on Twitter. “We pay tribute to those who lost their lives, and honor the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice to save others. We will #NeverForget

Boston’s 9/11 anniversary commemoration started off at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday on the Statehouse lawn, with a flag lowering, a moment of silence and a reading of the names of the victims. Walsh and Gov. Charlie Baker both participated in the Statehouse ceremony. It was around that time at the Charlestown Navy Yard that the USS Constitution began firing its cannon to commemorate the 9/11 anniversary. The cannon firings happened sporadically for two hours and lasted until about 10:30 a.m. Later in the afternoon, there was a public wreath-laying ceremony at the Boston Public Garden’s 9/11 Contemplative Garden.

Metro was there to capture many of Tuesday’s moments in photographs.
