Patriots Day has long had a special meaning in Massachusetts as the Commonwealth celebrates the anniversary of the first battles of the Revolutionary War.

 

School vacation is scheduled across the state this week and many students come to Boston, Lexington and Concord to participate and view re-enactments of war battles. Many local businesses close on the third Monday in April in honor of Patriots Day as well.

 

The Boston Marathon is run every year on Patriots Day as the day is also known as “Marathon Monday” to many in and around the city.

[videoembed id=134930] The Boston Red Sox also have a unique tradition on Patriots Day, hosting an MLB game at Fenway Park that begins each year at 11:05 a.m.. in order for fans to walk from the park to close-by Marathon sightlines in and around Kenmore Square when the game is over.

Depending on when the third Monday in April falls, the Bruins and Celtics have also held playoff games on Patriots Day, making it one of the busiest days of the year in the city.
