Boy dies in fall from balcony

Socks, shorts and a hysterical mother are memories a Calgary man won’t soon forget after a young boy plummeted 28 storeys from a downtown building balcony yesterday afternoon.

David Cole was just metres away from the alley behind the Bromley Square apartment building in the 100 block of 10th Avenue SW after 2:15 p.m., when he heard screams and rushed over to find a boy believed to be about nine years old lying on the ground.

“I knew there was nothing I could do for him once I saw him. It’s a sad sight,” Cole said.

“The mother was running around with a cellphone in her hand. She was hysterical; who wouldn’t be?”

Insp. Darren Cave said police continue to investigate to determine how the boy fell, but they don’t believe foul play was involved.

“It appears as though it was an accident, but we’re early in the investigation and we look at it from all angles,” Cave said, adding some witnesses reported the boy was reading on the balcony before the fall.
