Langley RCMP have identified the six-year-old boy killed in a tragic driving accident as Joshua Manfred Bates.
The boy was killed on Wednesday when he was struck by a vehicle while standing on the sidewalk with another four or five boys — all under age 10 — in front of a pharmacy at the corner of 88 Avenue and Walnut Grove Drive.
The driver of the 1991 Ford Escort, a 51-year-old woman, is described by police as being “extremely distraught.”
Speed, alcohol and drugs have been eliminated as a direct cause of this incident, said Cpl. Peter Thiessen.
According to some media reports the woman panicked and hit the gas pedal instead of the brake.
Bates leaves behind four siblings, ranging in age from 2 to 13. His parents said that he loved swimming and that he was looking forward to starting Grade 2.
He learned to ride a two-wheeler for the first time last week.
