A nine-year-old boy was treated for hypothermia, but was otherwise fine, after being separated from his family on a hike on Vancouver Island and spending the night alone in the woods.

A passerby found the boy yesterday morning off a logging road near Oceanside, about five kilometres from where he had gone missing in Englishmen River Provincial Park, southwest of Parksville.

The boy got lost while walking parallel to a trail where his family was hiking, said RCMP Cpl.
Darren Lagan.

“After realizing that the boy was no longer with the group, they began a search, which lasted for approximately one hour, before police were alerted,” he said.

The boy was found the next morning — about 15 hours after going missing, wearing only shorts and a T-shirt.
