Investing in innovative research methods and equipment will benefit all Albertans, says Doug Horner, deputy premier and minister of advanced education and technology.
The Hotchkiss Brain Institute (HBI) will receive $2.3 million from the Canada-Alberta Western Economic Partnership Agreement, the University of Calgary and Integra LifeSciences Corp.
The funding will be used to further nerve regeneration research and technologies.
Environment Minister Jim Prentice said advances in science and technology are essential to Alberta. “We must combine the best of our intellectual and natural resources to create jobs,” he said.
Some of the funding has been used to purchase state-of-the-art imaging and analysis equipment.
Nerve repair and regeneration technologies will be made more accessible due to funding, said Horner. “Initiatives like (the HBI) can result in benefits not only for Albertans, but for people worldwide.”
Funding also supports U of C students. “It means not having to share equipment, like microscopes,” said Curtis Hay, a fourth-year bachelor of health student.
