Break the ice by learning new greetings

Have you ever wondered how to greet somebody in Cantonese, Punjabi or Tagalog?

Here’s your chance. Former mayor Sam Sullivan is inviting Vancouverites to Greeting Fluency — a cultural luncheon event that focuses on learning seven important phrases in the languages of some of their neighbours.

“There are so many new things to learn from acquainting oneself with new languages,” said Sullivan.

“You gain new insight into a culture, new friends, immediate welcome by members of different cultures — and there’s an old saying: ‘Learn a new language, gain a new soul.’ So (you’re able to) enhance your own internal life.”

The event is aimed not at teaching people new languages but at endowing them with “greeting fluency” so they’re able to cross language barriers.
