The outrage caused by a duo of English teens who donned 9/11-themed Halloween costumes has rippled across the pond to the U.S. by Wednesday morning.
The 19-year-old University of Chester students, Amber Langford and Annie Collinge, showed up to a costume contest at Rosie’s nightclub in Chester wearing outfits depicting the towers during the attack on 9/11, including flames and smoke-like headpieces — and won for “best dressed.” They received £150 and front page infamy after a photo of them in their tasteless costumes was splashed across The Sun under the headline “Towering Stupidity.”
Langford and Collinge were quick to backtrack on their dumbfounding Halloween plan, telling the Sun,”The idea was to depict a serious, modern-day horror that happened in our lifetime and was not intended as a joke.”
The nightclub, Rosie’s, was quick to delete its social media accounts but issued a statement blaming the contracted DJ who presented the award, saying, “We are extremely concerned that an award was made to two women dressed in a distasteful and offensive manner.”
Parody Twitter account @RosiesProblems, which typically tweets jokes about the nightclub for its patrons, has been following the backlash, most recently calling for the DJ who awarded the pair the “best dressed” award to be publicly named.
