Brother of Mariam Makhniashvili home safe

TORONTO - The brother of missing teen Miriam Makhniashvili ran away overnight because his family wanted him to concentrate on math and the boy wanted to play guitar, his father said today.

TORONTO - The brother of missing teen Miriam Makhniashvili ran away overnight because his family wanted him to concentrate on math and the boy wanted to play guitar, his father said today.

Seventeen-year-old Giorgi Makhniashvili didn't come home from school Monday, but walked into a police station about 5:15 a.m. today, before being returned to the family home on Roehampton Avenue, near Mount Pleasant and Eglinton.

His father, Vakhtang Makhniashvili, says his son had gone to Vaughan, just north of Toronto.

“He had some decisions for example about who to become,” Vakhtang told reporters about the family squabble that led the boy to run.

“He wanted to be a musician and I was advising him to be busy with math. This kind of stuff.”

The father says his son took his guitar and rode his bike to Vaughan instead of coming home Monday afternoon.

The boy's sister, Mariam Makhniashvili, disappeared more than a year ago at the age of 17 after walking to Forest Hill Collegiate Institute.<

The only trace of her since then has been the discovery of her backpack.

Toronto's police Chief Bill Blair said they took the boy's disappearance seriously because of what had happened to his sister.

Vakhtang said Tuesday just because his son ran away that doesn’t mean that’s what happened with Miriam.

He said his daughter had only been in Canada for a short time when she disappeared, while his son has been here for almost a year and a half.

“So the situation is quite different,” he said.

Vakhtang said he’s not sure where his son was in Vaughan, and suspects Giorgi returned because he knew people were looking for him and that “it was quite cold.”

He said his son didn’t say much when officers brought him home and he learned what happened from the police.

Vakhtang said his first reaction when his son didn’t come home was that he had been abducted, and that it was stressful for his wife.
