Many of us are aware of the effort to reduce vehicle emissions in order to cut down on the impacts of climate change. What you may not know is there's a similar movement going on in rural Alberta, but instead of cars the focus is on cows.

"Cattle are one of the emitters of greenhouse gases, largely arising from the manure and methane and it comes from the fermentation and the way they digest food," said Alison Sunstrum, vice-president of GrowSafe Systems.

Her Airdrie-based company has developed technology which allows information to be transmitted through an electronic tag. It helps measure how much they eat and how often, even their drinking habits.

The bovines are being monitored in the hopes of creating a more fuel efficient cow, one that will have the right genetic make-up to emit less methane.
