Bungalows offer glamour, warmth

Balancing modern and traditional elements is never easy but The Bungalows at Kilgour Estate pulls the effect off well.

Tania Richardson and Melandro Quilatan, principle partners at Tomas Pearce Interior Design Consulting Inc., outfitted the spacious model suite with classic elements while staying true to modern sensibilities.

“We wanted to design a space that will appeal to traditionalists and modernists alike,” Quilatan said.

Streamlined simplicity accentuates the fresh, open-concept look while cooler tones and elegant touches maintain a sense of glamour throughout the suite, particularly within the main living area where a baby grand piano provides a focal point for the layout of the space.

“We’ve taken away the formality while respecting the open concept. It’s about mixing the traditional with the streamlined,” Richardson said.

As expected from any bungalow design, the principle bedrooms and the master ensuite are on the main floor but a partial second floor with guest and secondary rooms infuses a modern sense of practicality into the entire unit.

In the kitchen, Richardson and Quilatan took their inspiration directly from the gorgeous stone floor tiles, picking out colours and shades to create a unified look that invites warmth.

“Serenity is important. Because the kitchen is the centre of the home, we wanted to establish a peaceful emotion there,” Quilatan said.

In the expansive basement area, which includes a billiards room and movie room, Richardson and Quilatan made a point of keeping things light and airy despite the lack of natural light. Pot lights and strategically placed mirrors help maintain a good balance between light and shadow that avoids the dimness of most basements without over-lighting the space.
