The Barenaked Ladies’ Ed Robertson says the kitchen is a very social place in his home.

Q: What is your fondest memory from your family kitchen?

A: I love it when my kids help with the cooking. The kitchen is a very social place in our home — it is the spot we eat most of our meals. Weekend breakfasts are always a good time, and it’s my kids’ favourite meal.

Q: What kitchen aromas bring back fond memories?

A: My kids are all big fans of BBQ ribs. Most of my favourite cooking aromas come out of my Big Green Egg on the deck.

Q: What is your favourite food to cook?

A: Call me crazy, but it’s tough to beat a good homemade hamburger. Simply mix medium ground beef (or a mixture of beef, pork or veal), and butter or olive oil and salt. No bread crumbs, eggs or onions, etc. … that’s all for putting on top of your burger.

Q: How did the first meal you prepared turn out?

A: I think most of the meals I first prepared consisted of canned soups and grilled cheeses … and they turned out as well as could be expected. I think one of the first things I learned to make was a simple spaghetti sauce … don’t we all.
