Bus route plans prompt ire

Although OC Transpo’s proposed bus route changes are intended to improve Ottawa’s transit system, many riders here don’t agree.

Crystal Beach/Lakeview Community Association president Ruth Tremblay said combining express Route 59 from Crystal Beach to downtown with local Route 166 will slow down service even more.

“The city should just leave things the way they are — it’s working right now for us, so why change it?”

City councillors met yesterday to discuss Transplan 2009, a report recommending transit route changes to be made in September in order to make the system more efficient.

The consultation period for the report this year included an especially close focus on customer comments, following the citywide transit strike.

Transit users wrote, emailed and faxed more than 2,100 comments to councillors concerning the proposals.

Of those, 1,650 opposed the proposed changes.

Coun. Clive Doucet said the committee’s proposals on building busways won’t necessarily improve Ottawa’s transit traffic.

“I don’t believe the proper vision for the city is buses everywhere,” he said.
