A great divide separates the local activist community in the name of former U.S. president George Bush.
One half wants to “throw shoes” and the other half wants to celebrate the fact a former president is no longer in power when the man comes to the city March 17 for a speaking engagement, according to a local group.
“Some of them want to be old-school and the other half wants to join together and be happy and celebratory,” campaigner Paul Hughes said. “It’s an issue polarizing the activist community in the city.”
Political analyst Keith Brownsey said such political unrest among city activists is not uncommon.
“It is very typical to have debates like this anytime you have two different ideals,” he said.
But Brownsey also said it’s highly unlikely anyone would get close enough to throw a shoe at the former president anyway.
“It will be like, shoes in hand as a symbol, but nothing like that would happen. It’s just a symbol,” he added.
