OTTAWA - Trade Minister Stockwell Day says municipalities which try to retaliate against protectionist measures south of the border will just make matters worse.

Several municipalities are supporting a motion at an annual gathering this week that would restrict purchases from suppliers in protectionist countries, specifically the United States.

Day says that's like dropping a grenade in a room and hurting everyone.

He says he would like to see greater pressure exerted on the Obama administration and on Congress to act against protectionism.

He's telling businesspeople he needs them to deliver the anti-protectionist message to their counterparts in the United States.
