Buying a pet? Don’t forget they’re a lot of work

RE: Pet surrenders rising, says Humane Society (April 2)

The story about the two cats left in Jill Brown Park illustrates something that has been bothering me for a long time.

Buying a pet is a long-term commitment and people should realize that. Yes, looking after a pet can get expensive especially if there are health issues. You can usually lessen your costs by buying cheaper food, but when it comes to vet bills, you have to make a choice.

I was almost faced with a vet bill I couldn’t afford, but I would have humanely put the pet down or found a new home for it, rather than abandon it.
