Calgarian fined after on-flight incident

A Calgary man who was said to be intoxicated and unruly during a flight from Montreal to Halifax was arrested Wednesday by Halifax RCMP.

He was fined $1,250 Thursday at Dartmouth provincial court.

Officers were called to Halifax Stanfield International Airport at 11 a.m. Wednesday after a complaint from Air Canada about “an unruly male on board an incoming flight,” an RCMP release said.

“It was reported to us he was possibly intoxicated, swearing and not listening to crew instructions,” police spokesman Cpl. Joe Taplin said. “And then he removed one of the plastic coverings on the inside of a window.”

When Air Canada Flight 662 landed in Halifax, police were on-site waiting. They then met with the flight crew and went on board to arrest the man.

“He was quite cordial,” Taplin said. “Then when we were taking him off the plane — once he was in handcuffs — he kind of sat down a tried to resist a bit.”

Darren Scott Martin, 32, was in court Thursday on charges of mischief and failing to comply with flight crew instructions.

He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to $250 on the mischief charge and $1,000 for the other violation.
