Accolades are pouring in for a trio of local “heroes” who saved an elderly woman from a fire in Vancouver, though the heroism is bittersweet, according to officials.
Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Gabe Roder said three people from Calgary were in the city for the Olympics when a fire broke out last Friday in the upscale neighbourhood of Point Grey at 9 p.m.
“They helped get a 94-year-old woman out of the house and tended to her, and we are grateful for the heroism,” Roder said, adding the actions saved the woman’s life.
However, a 38-year-old woman died in the fire, Roder said, adding two men in the group made every effort to save the woman from the burning house.
“It is bittersweet. They were able to save one woman, but my understanding is they were pretty upset about not being able to help the other woman. It’s really tragic.”
Fire investigators have determined that the blaze was accidental in nature, though they have not pinned it down to an exact cause.
