Watch out for a group of streakers on Calgary streets this weekend.
The fourth annual Underwear Affair Run and Walk will see Calgarians of all ages, shapes and sizes stripping down to their skivvies to raise funds for cancers below the belt.
Cancers below the waist are often considered taboo according to event organizers. The Underwear Affair allows people to feel comfortable talking about the importance of education around these cancers.
The popular race sees participants dressed in costumes ranging from footie pajamas to near-scandalous underwear sets. Anything goes, as long as it’s legal.
For Johnathon MacDonald, 29, of The Budgie Smugglers team, the event is personal. A testicular cancer survivor, he knows the importance of cancer awareness.
“A lot of guys don’t know you can get this at such a young age,” he said. “I was lucky. It’s a lot worse for other people.”
Proceeds from the event go towards the Tom Baker Cancer Centre as well as 15 other cancer centres in the province. Last year, 1,244 participants raised $850,000 for cancers below the belt.
