Calgary goes dark for Earth Hour

The Calgary Zoo, all municipal buildings and the Calgary Tower will be turning off their power for 60 minutes on Saturday evening — but that’s just the beginning of Calgary’s Earth Hour activities.

As the skyline dims, local brewery Wild Rose will be operating without power. It will have an Earth Hour cold food menu, prepared without an oven or heating.

“It’s important to celebrate Earth Hour and appreciate that energy conservation,” said Tina Wolfe, spokesperson for the brewery. “Hopefully people will remember it and will go home and think the next time they turn their lights on.”

Café Koi didn’t enjoy the same success as Wild Rose last year when it attempted to operate without power.

“It was rather stressful to do it,” said owner Philip Wong. “I can’t put my staff through that again.”

The University of Calgary’s Rothney Observatory will also be monitoring the change in sky glow.
