Calgary police crack down on impaired driving

Checkstops will be ramped up over the holiday season with Calgary police doing checks in the afternoon as well as the evening.

Const. Jim Lebedeff said these enhanced checkstops will take place between noon and 8 p.m. three days a week at various locations in the city.

“By doing the enhanced checkstops, we also have extra eyes, ears and noses out there to help us possibly get this impaired (drivers) off the streets,” said Lebedeff. “Even having one drink may throw your decision-making and your reaction time off.”

Along with checkstops, Big Rock Brewery, in partnership with the CPS and Associated Cabs, launched their Posters and Coasters campaign yesterday.

Approximately 100 Big Rock distributors around the city will be outfitted with warning posters and coasters that have the number to call a cab.

“It’s a priority for Big Rock at this time of year to promote the message to make sure people are doing the right thing and getting home safely,” said Tom Stuart of Big Rock.

“Enjoy it but don’t abuse it.”
