Calgary tops in Alberta for speed traps: Website

Calgary has the highest number of citizen-reported speed traps in Alberta, according to a U.S.-based website.

The website speedtrap.org logs citizen reports of speed traps, and Calgary ranks highest in the province, with Lethbridge leading in the under-100,000 population category.

Gary Biller from the U.S.-based National Motorist Association believes it boils down to one thing — cash.

“Traffic tickets have been a tried and true method of revenue,” said Biller.

“It’s not about safety.”

The site’s ranking system is based on information submitted by the public with roughly 100 listed for Calgary.

“The city releases in advance to the public, monthly traffic updates and positioning of 48-intersection safety cameras, according to Calgary Police.

“Speed alone can kill,” said Const. Jim Lebedeff of the Calgary Police Traffic Unit.

“We now have the highest number of registered vehicles on the roadway — ever.”

Last year $34.2 million of the city’s revenue came from traffic speed enforcement on red light, green light camera, and mobile photo radar, according to the police.
