Calgary violence headed here?

Calgary streets have been plagued with gangland murders in the first days of 2009, and a local expert says the violence will soon be headed north.

“The (gangsters) in Calgary are in ‘graduate school,’” said criminologist Bill Pitt. “Once the two Vietnamese gangs fighting each other consolidate, they’ll move here.”

On Jan. 3, an Edmonton man was arrested at the Coutts border crossing after police found 10 semi-automatic handguns and 300 rounds of ammo in panels ripped from his vehicle in a search.

Pitt believes the arsenal was destined to aid in the ongoing battle.

Four out of five people murdered in Calgary this year were victims of gang violence — and the other an innocent victim in one of the attacks.
