Calgary Zoo admits it may be to blame for deaths of 41 stingrays last spring

CALGARY – An Ontario-based animal protection group says there should be an independent investigation into the Calgary Zoo.

The call from Zoocheck Canada in Toronto comes after the president of the zoo admitted human error is almost certainly to blame for the deaths of 41 stingrays last spring.

Clement Lanthier said he’s 99 per cent sure a lack of dissolved oxygen in the water tank killed 41 of 43 cownose rays.

Zoocheck spokeswoman Julie Woodyer says the zoo have been in a downward spiral for the last decade and an independent operational review needs to be done.

She says until that happens, animals will continue to be at risk and will continue to die.

The stingray exhibit was reopened to the public in December after zoo officials said it was impossible to say exactly what had caused the deaths last May.
