Call Calgary the big smoke

Calgary’s medical officer is warning people with respiratory problems to be cautious as smoke from British Columbia forest fires hangs over the city.

Prevailing winds are blowing the smoke into much of Alberta and other weather conditions are keeping it close to the ground, turning normally blue skies a dusky grey. “For healthy people it’s just annoying, it’s not a health concern,” said Richard Musko, Calgary’s Medical Officer from Alberta Health Services. “But for people with chronic lung conditions, this may worsen their symptoms.”

He said any damage or irritations would be only temporary, so unless people experience major difficulty breathing they should go about their day as usual. “Almost every summer this happens” he said.
