SURREY, B.C. - Megan Baird of Ajax, Ont., drove in the winning run with a seventh-inning single and Canada edged Japan 1-0 at the 2011 Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship on Tuesday.



Baird drove in Shelby Lia of Whitby, Ont., who entered the game as a pinch-runner for Kaleigh Rafter after the native of Guelph, Ont., opened the inning with a single.



Japan managed to get runners on first and third on the bottom of the seventh, but Sarah Phillips induced Maki Furuta into a groundout to pick up the win.



Phillips, from Mississauga, Ont., pitched three innings, allowing five hits and a walk.



Starter Jennifer Caira of Toronto allowed three hits and two walks over four innings, while picking up two strikeouts.



Mika Someya went all seven innings for Japan, surrendering five hits and one run. She struck out three batters and walked one.



Canada improved to 3-2 and remained in third place in the International Division, two points back of Japan with a game in hand.
