Canada falls to Russia in Universiade basketball

Halifax’s Christian Upshaw and the Canadian men’s basketball team lost 89-77 to Russia in the first game of the second phase at the 25th Summer Universiade in Belgrade, Serbia, yesterday.

Canada, 2-1, faces Israel, 4-0, today.

In women’s soccer play, Canada — featuring Halifax’s Rachael Sweatnam — lost 4-1 to France in the quarter-finals.

In the pool, Halifax’s David Sharpe’s personal best of 56.58 seconds in the men’s 100-metre backstroke on the weekend placed him 20th and set a new Nova Scotia record. He also set a record in the 50 backstroke in 27.22 seconds.
