Canada Line to open three months early

Vancouver’s Canada Line will open for business three months ahead of schedule.

The 19-kilometre rapid-transit line, connecting Vancouver with Richmond and Vancouver International Airport, will open by September’s Labour Day long weekend, the province announced Friday.

The $2-billion project had been slated for completion by November 2009.

It is expected to reduce one-way car trips by 200,000 a day as commuters or travellers move between Vancouver, Richmond and the airport in less than 25 minutes.

The stations are still being finished and the restoration of construction sites is close to being complete.

Trains are travelling the length of the line to test and commission the system.

The project was partnership between Canada, B.C., TransLink and the Vancouver Airport Authority.
