Canada, meet your humble Gemini host Cory Monteith

Life has changed quite drastically for Glee star Cory Monteith in the last two years. A self-described Canadian “working class actor,” Glee’s success means Monteith now has to cope with daily paparazzi and ever-present fans. Still, he ain’t complaining.

“I went for coffee yesterday and a little car pulled up in front of me and start taking pictures of me, which was fine,” says Monteith, who plays Finn Hudson on the dramedy.

“And then I went back to my car and started driving away and I saw the guy running to his car to try and follow me. I just roll with it. It’s just part and parcel of what this all is. Making sure my zipper is up when I leave the house is really important.”

Part of that newfound fame means Monteith has been tabbed to host this year’s Gemini Awards, honouring the best in Canadian television.

“I can’t believe I’m part of the show and especially now I’m hosting. What the heck? Presenting is even cool, but I’m the host. It’s a tall order.”

Monteith credits his years spent as a busy West Coast actor on shows like Stargate, Whistler, and Supernatural with preparing him for his recent success.

“Absolutely. It only helped me. I think having cut my teeth doing a lot of stuff back home and figuring out how to act has proven indispensible,” says Monteith, who has a few skeletons in his acting closet that may be revealed at the Geminis.

“That’s a good idea. I’m absolutely prepared to make fun of myself. So if anyone would like to talk about the funnier or dumber things that I’ve done, I’m game. There’s a wolfman movie that comes to mind (Hybrid).”

In its second season, Monteith feels Glee is only now hitting its stride.

“I think the tone of the show has got more specified. I think the writing (and) the characters have gotten a lot more specific and the show has kind of developed a feel,” he says.
