WINNIPEG - Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff says Canada must help Haiti rebuild from "the ground up" after the devastating earthquake.

Ignatieff says Canada's aid so far is a good start but more will need to be done as the disaster's toll unfolds.

Speaking to university students in Winnipeg, Ignatieff called the earthquake a "disaster of biblical proportions."

He called on all Canadians to give generously to charities working on the ground in the devastated country.

He also commended the federal government for matching private contributions to the relief effort now underway.

Ignatieff says as the death toll rises, Canada's aid to Haiti is bound to increase.
