Canada should be a regular contender to represent North and Central America in the World Cup, said Bob Lenarduzzi.
The Whitecaps president was part of the squad that made Canada’s lone World Cup appearance in 1986 in Mexico. “I thought we should be back, if not for every World Cup, then certainly on a regular basis,” Lenarduzzi said.
The top three nations in CONCACAF qualify for the World Cup. The fourth-place team can also qualify through a playoff against the fifth place South American team.
“We should be finishing in the top four in CONCACAF,” said Lenarduzzi.
“We need to change the landscape of this game in this country, from the governance, right down to player development.”
The United States, Mexico and Honduras qualified from CONCACAF this year.
In 1986, Canada failed to pass the first round, dropping its first match 0-1 to France with a late goal. It then lost to Hungary and the Soviet Union, both with a score of 0-2.
