A Vancouver family was expected to arrive at the Philippines on Thursday, where their son, a popular writer, lecturer and film critic, and his Slovenian girlfriend were killed during what police called a botched robbery.

Filipino-Canadian Alexis Tioseco, 29, and his girlfriend, Nika Bohinc, 30, were killed Tuesday night by three gunmen who broke into their home.

Police said a newly hired maid allegedly led the gunmen into the suburban Manila home, and Tioseco and Bohinc walked in on the robbery and apparently startled the intruders.

“No one has been arrested as of this moment. We are still tracking the suspects,” said Benjamin Elenzano, chief of the homicide investigation unit in Manila.

He said the victims were shot several times and killed instantly.

Dominic Tioseco, who resides in Richmond, said his cousin Alexis appears to have been the victim of his own success in a city where violent crime, including robberies and kidnappings, are common.

“The version that I get from inside, from my relatives, is that the new maid that they had is part of a gang,” Dominic Tioseco said.
