Canadian TV going 3-D as first models hit store shelves

Some of Canada’s first 3-D televisions will be available to consumers next Friday.

Samsung LED 3-D TVs will be available at Future Shop stores across the country. They are available in sizes of 40, 46 and 55 inches and range in price from about $2,500 to $4,000.

“This is a huge launch for us,” said Elliott Chun, a spokesman for Future Shop, who experienced the technology when it was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January.

“This is the most talked about consumer electronics for 2010 … a lot of people have been waiting for 3-D televisions.”

Recent months have seen a number of 3-D movies, including James Cameron’s Avatar and Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.

In the U.S., Discovery Channel and ESPN have both announced plans for 3-D channels.

This summer’s World Cup will also see select games broadcast in 3-D in seven cities around the world.

But while content for the televisions is in its infancy, Chun said the TVs function as top-of-the line 1080 HD televisions.

Sony plans to begin selling its 3-D TVs later this summer.
