Canadians change their minds on deficit spending, now say good thing

OTTAWA – Canadians are coming around to the idea of massive federal deficits.

The latest Canadian Press-Harris-Decima survey finds that a strong majority of 58 per cent now support the government’s plan to spend the country out of recession.

That is a 10-point increase over the number who said they were in favour of running deficits to stimulate the economy in a mid-January survey.

The survey shows that 77 per cent of respondents believe spending will be effective within two years, with 43 per cent saying it will show results immediately or within one year.
