Candidates take poll with grain of salt

A poll released yesterday showed mayoral candidate Jim Watson with a large lead over incumbent Larry O’Brien, and Clive Doucet rapidly gaining ground on the current mayor.

But all three contenders said they are taking the poll with a grain of salt.

“I’m not an expert on polling, so I have no idea who’s going to overtake who,” said Watson yesterday. “I’m just working hard and I’m out here not taking anything for granted. I’m earning every vote, one person at a time.”

O’Brien said his campaign conducted its own blind poll where “the numbers were not as negative. “Thirty-three per cent of pollers are still undecided,” he said.

He’s also busy, he said, “chasing as many hands as we can. We’re putting full pedal to the metal for the last four or five days.”

O’Brien’s campaign will continue to outline the difference between his policies and Watson’s, he said.

Doucet said he doesn’t believe the polls.

“I believe the people I talk to on the street,” he said.

The poll was done by Leger Marketing and released by Sun Media.
