Cannonball run more than joy ride

What has four wheels, branded tires, and raised more than $35,000 for children’s cancer research?

Barry Stewart and Paul Seto’s Mitsubishi cannonball race car, which they drove in the One Lap of America tour, driving across 11 tracks over nine straight days in order to raise funs for the Kids with Cancer Society.

Seto, a family doctor from Edmonton, feels that this year’s 20th place finish out of 68 races was a success, along with the number of funds raised, but he is confident that they can do even better next year.

“Hopefully we’ll do this every year to raise awareness,” he says, doctor’s bag and racing helmet in hand.

“We’re hoping to raise more money and get even more sponsors.”

Seto is one of only a handful of Edmontonians to ever participate in this race, and even fewer doctors have participated. While he admits it is fun, he says that’s ultimately not the reason they are there.

“I think doctors should lead by example,” says Seto. “ We used to run to raise money, now we drive. We’re not just doing it for fun, I have to raise money for a good cause.”
