Canoers ‘lucky’ no one injured after falling into Elbow River

With warmer weather comes the potential for waterway mishaps.

Fire officials say it’s lucky nobody was hurt when a canoe hit a bridge abutment and knocked the occupants into the Elbow River yesterday afternoon.

Fire battalion Chief Kevin Haines said the canoe occupants made it safely to shore on their own when the canoe struck the bridge on 25th Avenue SW. Police and fire aquatic teams worked together to free the entangled canoe by using the police jet boat.

“It’s a hazard for anyone else in the water so we couldn’t leave it there, but everyone and everything was safe once we got it out,” Haines said.

“It was just inexperience — it happens every year. It’s lucky nobody was seriously injured.”
