Timberlea’s Wayne Smith came up just short in a fierce season-opening battle on the Carquest Pro Stock Tour on Saturday.

Smith, a five-time tour champion, finished second, just 0.317 of a second behind winner Greg Proude of Springvale, P.E.I., at the Ron MacGillivray 100 at Riverside Speedway near Antigonish on Saturday.

Antigonish’s Donald Chisholm came third, while defending Carquest champion Turple placed fourth and grabbed the most-laps-led award after leading for more than half the race. Kent Vincent of Crapaud, P.E.I., rounded out the top five.

The tour is back on the track this coming Saturday with the Parts for Trucks 100 in Oyster Bed Bridge, P.E.I.
