ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - A snowstorm in Newfoundland temporarily stranded about 100 vehicles Tuesday on the Trans-Canada Highway west of St. John's.

RCMP Const. Stephan Remillard says at one point, an elderly couple had to be evacuated by police from the area to ensure they had access to their medications.

Cars were stopped along a 100-kilometre stretch of the highway between St. John's and the community of Whitbourne.

The Mounties said traffic later cleared.
