An American political cartoonist has gone into hiding following death threats from radical Muslims.
Molly Norris drew the ire of the Muslim world back in April when she proposed “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day” — an attempt, Norris claimed at the time, to put into perspective calls for vengeance against “South Park” creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker, who had parodied Islamic rage against drawings of their holy prophet.
In addition, Norris released a cartoon, later recalled, portraying several inanimate objects — a tea cup, a spool of thread, a cherry, etc — claiming to be the Prophet Muhammad. Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Awlaki called Norris a “prime target.”
Norris has gone deep undercover — as her former home, Seattle Weekly, says, she’s “moving, changing her name, and essentially wiping away her identity” — so no current quotes can be sourced. But back in May she described the situation: “It’s been horrible. I’m just trying to breathe.”
