Cash marked for disability access

Community organizations can now have their facilities retrofitted to be more accessible to those with disabilities with the support of a $45-million investment from the federal government.

Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Diane Finley made the announcement at United Way Ottawa with president Michael Allen.

“Through the Enabling Accessibility Fund, the government of Canada is improving access to facilities, activities and services, and enabling all Canadians to participate fully in society,” said Finley.

Organizations have until Jan. 13 to submit their applications to have mid-size projects funded by the grant to make facilities more accessible. The government had previously committed $45 million in 2008 and, “as a result, thousands of people have accessed the places they couldn’t enter before,” said Finley.
