Check your receipts as some shops yet to set registers to 5% rate

Vancouver shoppers might want to check their receipts to make sure they’re not paying too much GST as some stores still haven’t adjusted their registers.

As of Jan. 1 the federal government reduced the GST to 5 per cent from 6 per cent.

Staff at two Yaletown stores said yesterday they were still waiting for managers to adjust the registers while hundreds of storeowners — mostly small business owners — flocked to cash register suppliers for help.

Tish Gladwyn, office manager for Pacific Cash Register Inc., said she posted instructions online, but many clients would rather come in for help.

"There’s a lot of small businesses and older people who aren’t that comfortable (doing it themselves), so they tend to carry their register in and want us to do it," she said.

"I’ve got hoards of people in my showroom waiting for me."

Margarita Donovan, corporate sales manager for Donovan Sales, a cash register retailer, said her shop was so busy yesterday she had to bring in extra staff.

"My phones are so jammed up my voice mail isn’t kicking in anymore," said Donovan.

She said so many registers have been dropped off she’s not sure when she’ll get to them. "Within this week we’ll have about 95 per cent of our customers changed over," said Donovan. "There are always the ones that wait until the last minute."
