CAW president says talks intensifying as demands on union close to limit

TORONTO – Labour concession talks between General Motors of Canada and the Canadian Auto Workers are hitting rough waters.

Union president Ken Lewenza says his team has nearly reached their limit three days after a government-imposed deadline had passed. Ottawa and the Ontario government need the company to present a solid restructuring plan before they hand over $6 billion in financial assistance – and that won’t happen without CAW agreeing to cost savings.

Lewenza admits the union doesn’t have much leverage, but said there’s going to be a time when the team says “enough’s enough.”

The outstanding issues continue to be around pensions, benefits and wages.

He says it’s unlikely an agreement will be reached by the end of the day.
