CD FAS defeats rival CD Aguila 1-0

CARSON, Calif. – Alejandro Bentos scored the lone goal as CD FAS defeated Salvadorian archrival CD Aguila 1-0 to win the DobleClasico Centro Americano trophy at the Home Depot Center on Saturday night.

Bentos, a forward from Argentina, gave FAS the lead in the 65th minute when he broke through the Aguila defence sending a looping shot over the head of goalkeeper Benji Villalobos.

Bentos nearly doubled the lead for his Santa Ana, El Salvador-based club in the 71st minute, when he again found himself alone in front of the goalkeeper, but had his shot from close range stopped by Villalobos.

The San Miguel, El Salvador-based Aguila team nearly tied it in the 79th minute when Ronald Torres fired a free kick from the edge of the box that was stopped by Luis Contreras.

The match between two of Central America’s most popular teams was an intensely physical meeting with 31 fouls and three yellow cards issued by referee Juan Guzman.

Aguila controlled possession for much of the first half generating several scoring chances, but poor finishing prevented the club from taking an early lead over their rivals.

FAS nearly pushed ahead of their rivals in the 49th minute when Bentos saw his chance from point-blank range turned away by Villalobos.
