Data collected by University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine researchers indicates that banning cell phones while driving would not only save lives but also save money.

Researchers looked at the cost-effectiveness of implementing a complete cell-phone ban in Alberta and believe it could save up to $6 million in reduced health care costs and an additional $30 million per year in cleaning up after crashes.

“It’s an interesting policy issue,” author of the study Dr. Alan Shiell said.
