Chair of Catholic School Board unsurprised about HPV vaccine numbers

The Calgary Catholic School board chair said she isn’t surprised only
about 35 per cent of its Grade 5 students have received HPV vaccinations
compared to 70 per cent of public school students, according to Alberta
Health Services.

Marge Belcourt said the numbers were also low last year and believes Catholic parents remain wary about the drug.

“I think parents are just being cautious, but I don’t think there is anything wrong with that,” she said. “Parents have a choice and they are making their choice.”

Belcourt said the numbers could also reflect Bishop Fred Henry’s stance against HPV vaccinations.
