Charges laid after officers assaulted

Two Vancouver police officers suffered multiple bloodying blows to their faces during an arrest Wednesday afternoon.

Police were dispatched to the 2400 block of Commercial Drive after they received several 911 calls about a man walking down the street, pushing and punching people around him.

Officers escorted a suspect from a nearby coffee shop to their cruiser. As one of the officers looked up the man on a computer, the suspect allegedly punched the other member in the face and ran off across Commercial Drive.

A struggle ensued. Police allege the man jumped on the back of one officer and dealt blows to her head and back.

According to police, both officers were treated for severe bruising, while the suspect was unhurt.

Aija Louis Richardson is charged with two counts of assaulting a peace officer. The 27-year-old Vancouverite was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for being unlawfully at large before the incident.
