Charges laid in deadly hit and run

Charges have been laid against a Calgary man in Sunday’s hit and run that killed Sandra McEvoy, also known as Sandra Casey, outside of Money Pennies Eatery and Bar located at 1742 10 Ave SW.

Stavros (Steve) Costoulas, 43, was charged yesterday with one count of hit and run causing death after he allegedly failed to stop when he hit the woman at 2 a.m. Sunday.

Sgt. Graeme Ramsay said Costoulas arrived at the District 2 office Sunday around 3 p.m. and was being evasive about the collision he wanted to report, leading police to eventually issue a search warrant, where they found a 2007 Mitsubishi Gallant that allegedly struck the victim.

“I can’t even explain (why he drove off),” said Ramsay, adding alcohol or a suspended licence is usually involved with hit and runs. But Ramsay said none of the evidence points in that direction.

It’s possible Costoulas wanted to turn himself in, Ramsay said, but he may have been afraid.

Ramsay added that details surrounding Costoulas’ motivation when he came in to report the incident are unclear.

However, the sergeant hopes it provides a sense of closure for the family even though there’s nothing that can bring McEvoy back.

“We have a couple of unsolved hit and runs. Sometimes just knowing that someone’s been charged brings closure,” he said.
